Dogfight - The Musical (Lighting Design)

Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul

Book By Peter Duchan

Directed By Akash Bhide

This musical, produced by The Streetlight Collective at the Oakes Center in Summit, NJ, was my first time doing lighting design for a full show. Dogfight is a story about the memories of a November night in San Francisco, 1963. A group of young marines, fresh out of training and ready for some kinda time before they ship out to Vietnam, go out on the town looking for women to invite to a “Dogfight”, a party in which the marine judged to have brought the ugliest date wins prize money and bragging rights. Eddie Birdlace, an abrasive and cocky young marine who wants to fight the whole world, asks Rose, a shy but idealistic diner waitress who wants to change the world with her songs, to come to the party with him. What follows is a night of both cruelty and self-discovery. Defensiveness gives way to openness as Rose and Birdlace learn more about each other and about themselves.
