The Dee Howard Foundation
As a child, I loved paper airplanes. I would buy the books with all of the complicated folding instructions and the various designs. In elementary school, I was part of the short-lived paper airplane club, “Air Force Five” as well as its longer surviving (but nonetheless uncreatively named) successor, “Air Force Six”. All through recess we would take our (un)important papers and fold them into magnificent flying machines, having a great deal of fun and only occasionally hitting people. However, this video is not about paper airplanes. It is about the real kind and the young people who are learning to fly and maintain them. This was my second volunteer project done through Catchafire, a website that matches non-profits with volunteers who have skills to help them complete projects. I matched with the Dee Howard Foundation, an aviation and aerospace organization that seeks to bring STEM education to underserved youth in the San Antonio area. This video was a tribute to Wayne I. Fagan, the former Board Chair of the Dee Howard Foundation, who had recently stepped down and who was being honored at the organization’s 2022 Awards Dinner.
